Professional Career Interview Project
CONTACT AND PLANNING –
My initial contact with Tyrell Johnson was via Facebook. I follow Nitro Circus on Facebook and they posted a video documenting him wrapping a trophy truck in custom printed graphics. This to me was a very impressive feat. His company Envision Wraps was local here in Murray Utah so I sent him a message via facebook to arrange a meeting and explain to him the purpose of my phone call and my objective behind the interview. To prepare for the interview I arranged a few topics and several questions for each
topic. The topics consisted of
-Beginning in graphic design
-How to acquire big name clients
-Future plans and advice
My plans for opening the interview were to basically describe the purpose of the
interview and describe why I chose him for the interview. The question topics I chose
were career objectives and future goals. The questions I asked were
-How was graphic design brought into your life?
-How did you get your start in graphic design as a career?
-What different positions have you worked in in your career?
-What major challenges have you faced in your career in graphic design?
-What is the most impressive feat you’ve accomplished in your career?
-What was your favorite personal experience in your career?
-What if any future goals do you have?
-What advice would you give anyone looking to pursue a career in graphic design?
The interview took place at Envision Tint & Graphics in Murray, UT in a shop where Tyrell conducts his business and where he says “makes dreams come true”. For the interview I didn’t change my appearance any different that any normal day. In the beginning I was struggling to find an efficient way to document the interview. I decided to record the interview on my phone and document it afterward. This made everything very smooth and greatly reduced my stress and anxiety about the assignment.
I have since stayed in contact with this individual and have commissioned him for several jobs and school projects. Since this was my second interview the nerves weren’t nearly as bad as the original career interview I conducted. I was very much excited to sit down with someone who was affiliated with a big name client such as Nitro Circus. I believe that my interview skills in this given situation were much more effective than before since Tyrell was much younger than my previous interviewee and the environment was very laid back.
E-portfolio Reflective writing prompts
· My thoughts as I learned about this assignment as extra credit was honestly somewhat excitement. I had a great learning experience with the first interviewee so I was more than willing to conduct another.
· My anxiety was not really all there the shop had a very laid back feeling and the interviewee was very friendly.
· This was easy I used facebook as the network to find this individual.
· I chose this particular person because of there affiliation with Nitro Circus and also because he was a younger business owner.
· My pre-interview research was mostly done online browsing through the company’s facebook page and reading posts and comments.
· This interviewee taught me that nothing is impossible if you can think it up it can be done. Tyrell had a very positive outlook on life.
· The career lesson/life lesson I learned was that if you set your mind to something all it takes is a little dedication and hard work to achieve your goals.
· This interview I would say has changed my perception on the attitude I should have towards work
· Networking skills are important due to their ability to provide unlimited opportunity.
· The advice I would give to anyone given this opportunity is to look at the big picture is this project. Its much more that a grade.
